Weeks Hill Rd Bridge Closure

Weeks Hill Road Bridge in Stowe, near the intersection of Mayo Farm Road, will close beginning Wednesday, September 30 at 9:00 AM to facilitate construction of a new bridge.

The closure is anticipated to remain in place through the end of November. A signed detour will be in place. Please plan accordingly and use an alternate route.

The Town doesn’t always get to choose its timing with construction projects. This was particularly true with the Weeks Hill Bridge that suffered a partial bridge deck collapse.

The Town could not have left the current bridge open over the winter as the steel plates used as a temporary fix would not have been safe to drive on in icy conditions. Additionally, the bridge likely would have remained closed through the spring and early summer 2027, in a best-case scenario if construction was able to be completed then.

While a temporary bridge could have gotten us through the winter, it would have doubled the cost using local tax dollars and would be a significant engineering project by itself.  This is a challenging site and putting in a temporary bridge would potentially have taken as much time to install as to fix the current bridge.

In order to shorten the construction timeframe, the Town used pre-cast/pre-stressed concrete. We had originally hoped to start the project after foliage season, but the contractors indicated there would not be enough time to complete the project before the winter, which is also when the asphalt plants close.

These types of projects typically take years to complete, but the Town is hoping to accomplish this over the course of just a few months. We are also fortunate to have a bridge contractor that could fit it into their end of construction season schedule and to have a Public Works team capable of implementing the work.
